Philip “Chic” Bates was an integral part of Swindon Town, not only as a player but also a vital part of the club’s coaching team during one of its most successful periods.

Joining from Shrewsbury Town early in 1978, he quickly became a crowd favourite.

A slow start in terms of goals in his first season, he made his mark the following year by being top scorer.

While the strike partnership of Alan Mayes and Andy Rowland grabbed the headlines during the club’s run to the League Cup semifinals, chic was a more than able back up, along with former Southampton man, Paul Gilchrest. Indeed, he scored the winner at Wimbledon which set up the legendary quarter final against Arsenal.

Chic was also a trusted lieutenant as assistant manager to Lou Macari and Ossie Ardiles. His wise words were invaluable to both men.

On a personal level, I had the chance to speak to him many times and he was always courteous and friendly and even took an interest in my pretty ordinary Sunday League “career”.

RIP “Chico”, you’ll be missed.
